Self Service…

The purpose of man is to serve man...

On every trip to Europe, I’m always amazed at the lack of “self service” as compared to the United States which has set me to ponder the topic as is this a good thing or not?  As here (Europe) even in most McDonald’s they pick up after you rather then depend upon you the “consumer” to do so as part of the obligation of the meal which makes me feel more like a “customer“.

As in America we have started down a multi-decade path to turn people into “consumers” instead of “customers“.  As we the mercantile community simply want people to “consume” what we have to sell then “get the hell on out” as I use the last statement for purposeful effect as we seem to have taken ole Henry’s assembly line concepts to the extreme as the expectation is no longer to find value in what is provided, as its now just consume more and by the way you can super size for only 40 cents more.  Which means you get fatter, have to buy new clothes, pay more in doctors’ bills, buy exercise equipment, and etc.

As to back up a bit, why are we here has been the age old question man has sought to answer since the dawn of the ages.  Well folks hope you’re sitting down as I’m going to share the answer with you for free today!  Are you ready?  Ok, here it goes, it is to serve each other, yes it’s that simple as everything we do every day where we expect some form of remuneration is something we are doing to meet someone else’s needs or wants.  Yes folks it’s that simple really as life is not that complex.

So its here we go back to self service as in doing such deprives us as humans of our purpose in life as when was the last time one of those automated checkout machines ask even if only half heartedly how your day was and thanked you for your purchase?  As don’t get me wrong as this is not to say we should be Luddites living under some rock shunning technology at every turn.  Instead it warning to say we need to use it wisely as just because something appears to be a good idea on paper, doesn’t mean in practicality it is…

About Joseph Campbell

As a strong believer in the fact that "people work for people", it has been a life driver to better to understand the complexities of the various aspects which drive efficiency within this axiom, especially the concepts of leadership. Supporting this, I have been fortunate enough to having experienced this as leader on a global basis over the last decade and half. During this time it has been clear there are three core drivers being Life, Leadership and Economics.
