Comcast has just booted this poor soul in Seattle off its service for using more than his allotted 250 gigs of bandwidth a month for two months in a row! His suspension you ask is a whopping one year of no internet, no ability to upgrade, or option to buy more as one could say this is akin to some form of elementary school punishment. As if you don’t eat your meat, how can you expect any pudding, ok couldn’t resist the Pink Floyd link there.
Yet I can just hear some of you internet stalwarts out there are saying, wow! 250 gigs of data that’s a lot, he deserves what he got the no good two timing data hogger! As you sit there with your 56kbs dial up connection waiting for the rest of this page to load. But wait a minute there is something else you need to know as its 250 gig both ways as in upload and download added together, so let me ask you this?
How many of you are using a cloud based backup service like Mozy or Carbonite, have large music libraries, stream audio and video from the likes of Net Flicks or Amazon? Ok, before you start throwing stones at this poor soul you better start looking at your own house first as we are living in the cloud era and what would happen if you were cuts off from your data? In fact the internet is now likened to a utility service as its as basic to our modern life as is the electrical and water lines which come to our homes. In fact being a home based worker when not traveling, loss of the internet would mean the loss of my ability to do my job and therefore my livelihood. Whereas a disruption in water or electricity can be dealt with, loss of connectivity however is yet a new dimension. Also do you need to be reminded of the people like myself with VoIP?
This is where we’ve missed a key point which I’ve been calling out here is Obama needs not to fix health care, he needs to fix the availability of the internet as the success of the country will be predicated on our ability to “connect” and crazy actions on the part of providers like Comcast treating their customers as a 3 year old is not something our fragile commercial enterprise can tolerate at this point in time.
Also don’t get me wrong as I get the fact there isn’t a free lunch and this is the reason the government does need to involve themselves as a driver as the telecom world cannot afford another World Comm excel oops if you will, yet we need the assurance of large, stable pipes for the future growth of our economy. Just think if all that bail out money that went for executive bonus instead went to support a better internet what that would have brought for our economy. With this said, please communicate this message to your elected officials at all levels as with any luck if we say it enough times, they might get the idea…
