Everything Seeks It...

As this is one of the most amazing and over looked words we will find in the English language as it ranks right up there with death and taxes when we speak of the life’s axioms however it somehow doesn’t manage the same level of respect.  As if we want to admit it to ourselves or not, it’s an undisputed fact that everything in nature seeks it out and will wait an eternity if need be to achieve it.  Just ask our Dutch friends, the “Masters of Water” in the Nederland’s (“Low” Lands) as since a significant portion of their country was stolen from the sea , they know all too well the age old adage of “water will always find its own level” as they have spent generations fighting it back.

In fact, looking backward across time we will also see the Egyptians knew of this “magic” propensity of the life giving liquid which flows freely in the Nile and leveraged this very property to built one of the Seven Wonders of the World with their “water levels”.  So why is it that everyday man seems to have forsaken such a basic law of nature if you will.  As ignoring “equilibrium” or worse denying its existence would be a kin to looking the gray haired Albert Einstein in the eye and telling him he knew nothing of Relativity and we all know how the song goes as you don’t tug on Superman’s cape, nor take the mask off the ole Lone Ranger if we know what’s good for us.

Yet most we move through life living a “false economy” as least should one think they can beat “equilibrium” at its own game, they will have a rude awakening as it’s here where the likes of “Murphy’s Laws” and “Black Swans” are born to take back what was rightfully theirs in the first place.  Its here we should take a rest along the path for a minute, catching our breath to point out this does not mean pillaging and plundering is the theme as just the opposite our esteemed associate “equilibrium” is a double edge sword as it is not only a taker, it is also a giver too.  As water flowing down hill can mean a flood in the valley or a hydroelectric dam, the choice is ours to make.

In the past, we’ve discussed the “Power Laws” and how their counter forces of “improvement” lead to “saturation” and is a real example of equilibrium at work within our business life’s.  As here too, the Second Law of Thermodynamics basically says we have two things in the universe being “energy and matter” and there exists a dance between the two which we see when we awake every morning with the rising sun as each attempt to reach their own “equilibrium” providing us with the fresh rays of morning sunlight.

The question has to be asked, why do so many people believe they can cheat the system, and beat “equilibrium” at its own game?  As to me this amounts to nothing more than the fantasy of modern day alchemy spinning lead into gold as they clearly have missed the reality, there is no such thing as a free lunch…

About Joseph Campbell

As a strong believer in the fact that "people work for people", it has been a life driver to better to understand the complexities of the various aspects which drive efficiency within this axiom, especially the concepts of leadership. Supporting this, I have been fortunate enough to having experienced this as leader on a global basis over the last decade and half. During this time it has been clear there are three core drivers being Life, Leadership and Economics.
