One of the things I’ve written about in the past is the need to restructure the “US Postal Service” by discontinuing the delivery of “posts“, in other words the delivery of letters (parcel would be left in place). Many then asked how this would be dealt with and the answer is relatively easy in the perspective of a blog post. The US government along with a Social Security Number would issue and maintain a unique e-mail account for each US citizen and the “account” would be valid for their life.
Oh yes and as a side bar, it would be a federal offence to spam this account and this is not meant to be a tongue in cheek joke. Just as it is a federal offense for tampering with the mail inside the box, or better put the “domain” of the box itself. Which a violation of is punishable by fine or possibly jail time for the offense. Here these accounts would be “trusted” accounts as they would be issued under the sovereign auspices of the United States Government (as a side bar this would work for all governments, I am just using the US Government as an example).
Here too a national GAL (Global Address List) could be generated and keep in mind SPAM on these accounts would be a federal offence and they would not be tied to a geographic location so they would provide a measure of anonymity along with accessibility. This “account” since it would “unique”, it could also be used as part of a public/private “hash” to ensure validation of other transactions.
The other issue which this solves from a prior post is “Digital Homelessness” as a person could go into a library and check out a reading/internet device (as there will no longer be books so their charter will change) and access their governmental account.
Think about the persistency and uniformity this will give to us in our ability to fill our need to communicate. There may even be some out there which question the ability to do this and I point to digital TV, we as America made that happen and sure there were bumps, however at the end it did happen and is working today. We could do the same with this as develop a plan, set a date and march to.
Ok, I know there are you folks out there who think black helicopters are following you, well I’ve got news. They most likley are so you better don that sporty tin foil cap as you will need it. In a further post I will write more about the concepts of privacy post 1984, however the world we once knew is gone and it is not coming back. Smart search services now exist which can reassemble your profile from the pieces you leave behind as you live your life, so forget about digitally hiding.
Back on topic, the Postal Service (as they exited the letter service) could take over the administration of these mail accounts as they would be hosted on government servers. Also think about the savings for all the governmental units too, as all governmental correspondence would be electronic. Thus printing, mailing and filing costs will be a thing of the past. Again this would be a benefit for the taxpaying public.
The second thing is it would drive accountability into our society as dead beat parents and the like could be tracked and the same would hold true for criminals. While without question there are complexities which must be worked out, the general concept holds enough water to not only help our country, but possibly give it a much needed economic jump start. As the single key to global success will be efficiency and there will be no room to baby away nostalgic ideas as in the past. As the BRIC country order and connect themselves, we will be in the economic fight of our life.
